Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club Junior Pathway Explained

Key Terms:

GHL – The Girls Heat League is the Eastern Districts Junior Cricket Association's girls-only competition, providing a fun, inclusive and supportive environment for girls to play cricket with and against other girls from clubs across Brisbane's eastern suburbs.

BEARS – Bayside East and Redlands. This the representative region that we are part and who our players represent if they play rep cricket. They also oversee the divisional cricket competition for U13-U18s. Made up of clubs Wynnum, Carina, Bulimba, Holland Park, Mansfield, Muddies, Wellington Point, Redland Sharks, and Cleveland.

The Blasters Program is designed for children aged 5–10 who are new to cricket or not yet ready for U9s, focusing on basic skills like batting, bowling, throwing, and catching through small-sided games using soft equipment.

Players can progress into the Super Sixers Competition, which is for ages 7–10 and follows a similar format with an initial skills phase before transitioning into gameplay, preparing players for U9s teams. Games are six a side with everyone getting equal opportunities to bat, bowl and field, they use plastic balls and bats so no protective equipment is required.

Girls Heat League is a local girls competition that provides three stages of progression in order to cater for all levels of skill and experience. The girls competition is more skill based rather than age based, priority is for players play a level that best suits their skill, however, the grading is managed to have girls play with and against their own age group as much as possible.

  • Foundation (6-10 years): 16m pitch, softer ball, equal opportunities to bat irrespective of how many times you get out, hitting of tees for wides), T20.

  • Intermediate (8-12years): 18m pitch, 142g ball, no more tees, conventional rules around getting out, 25 over per side.

  • Heat (12 years +): Full pitch, more advanced level, some games on turf, 30 overs per side.

The BEARS Representative teams (U13s & U15s age groups), with QJC “A” teams and Development teams competing in regional carnivals to provide broader representative opportunities. Noting U15 teams for the U15 state challenge are selected from the U15 QJC carnival.

Brisbane Women’s Cricket is a Queensland Cricket run association that provides two stages of competition designed to provide that progression from junior cricket to senior cricket, the Stage 3 U14s competition and the open age BWC competition, there is also an open age T20 competition that runs. The girls competition is more skill based rather than age based, therefore U15-U17 may play in the U14s Stage 3 competition should their skill level suit.

·        U14 Stage 3: 20m pitch, 142g ball, 20-30 over games, matches played Friday nights OR Saturday afternoons, matches usually played on turf.

  • BWC Open Age: 20m pitch, 142g ball, 35 over matches played on Sunday, usually on turf.

The Lords Taverners U16 Competition is a key premier pathway, requiring selection through trials or strong performances, and often leading into Queensland U16 selection, which is chosen from training squads, Taverners players and the U15 State Challenge.

From around U15 level (skill permitting), players are encouraged to participate in Brisbane Grade Cricket to further develop against older competition, the premier grade senior competition is the pathway that can lead to professional opportunities such as Queensland Fire and Australian representation for those that seek it.

School cricket operates as a separate pathway with its own trials and teams, though it may consider club performances, while winter cricket provides additional playing opportunities to accelerate development and isn’t formally part of the pathway
